Forget the “Lord of the Rings”, Amazon’s next big hit could be “The Wheel of Time”
At the start of 2021, there was a shortlist of fantastic projects I was unusually excited for – Netflix’s Shadow and bone and The witcher Season 2, the The iron Throne prequel Dragon house, and the long gestation the Lord of the Rings series – but Prime Video’s The wheel of time was not on it. The hype for the Robert Jordan adaptation just wasn’t reaching my ears. The series had been quietly in production since 2019 and I knew Rosamund Pike was playing Moiraine, but other than that it wasn’t on my radar. It was a huge mistake!
Now that I’ve savored a flurry of preview clips, understood how confident Amazon is about the series, and (gulp) has finally started the odyssey of reading the Fourteen WoT books*, The wheel of time is the show I’m most excited for in 2021. And if you’re a fantasy fan, you should be too. All the first signs indicate The wheel of time to be tall. Plus, the story itself is a perfect blend of rich world-building, old-fashioned fantasy, and coming-of-age tales.
* In my defense, I had a bunch of sci-fi and fantasy buddies in the 2000s who were frustrated with the “slog” and they vehemently cautioned me. You know, because they didn’t know it would end well. (Or at least that’s what I was told. I’m only halfway through Volume 5 at the moment. No spoils, please!)
The wheel of time may be new to you, or you might be skeptical because so many fantastic series have burned you already. Nonetheless, I feel pretty damn excited for the series based on everything I’ve seen and heard so far. Here are five reasons why you should be excited The wheel of time (and why I’m keeping my fingers crossed this will be my next favorite fantasy series…).
It happens. Soon.
Waiting is perhaps one of the most frustrating aspects of being a fan of any fantasy series. We spend years of our lives waiting for new books to be added to an ongoing series and even longer for Well film and television adaptations to the screen. The wheel of time has a lot of adaptations in production as the two book series are completed – so no questions about which end the showrunners are working towards – and the show is coming soon.
The wheel of time Season 1 will air in November 2021. It’s three months away. It’s not next year or in the future. Or September 2, 2022. There is a date attached to the series and it’s coming soon.
In addition, it should be noted that in addition to COVID-19, The wheel of timeMuch of the production of appears to have been … uneventful. Rafe Judkins remained a showrunner. The directors made the changes (we think) on time. There are no terrible stories about on-set injuries or COVID outbreaks. Heck, I haven’t even heard any stories like the whole series needs to be re-filmed (like the one from Amazon Carnival row.) The only items that have been leaked are blurry photos of actors in costume (which are hard to find!)
So it seems The wheel of time It’s going well… So hey, Amazon is pretty darn confident about it.
Amazon has already ordered season 2.
You know how The wheel of time Does season 1 only come out in November? We haven’t even gotten a real trailer yet. Yet Amazon has already ordered The wheel of time Season 2. In fact, the second season is currently filming in the Czech Republic. This means the scripts are complete, the story is moving forward, and Amazon is so confident in The wheel of time, they want to make sure that they can get a new season on Prime Video as soon as possible.
So that’s good news! Right? Oh you still don’t know why you should care about The wheel of time???
The cast is hot.
It might sound a little silly, but one thing people seem to love about their TV shows is sexy people. The wheel of time is a high fantasy series that truly appreciates the warmth of its characters. Do you think I’m kidding? The first novel (and the series as a whole) follows an agelessly beautiful Aes Sedai named Moiraine (played by the gorgeous Rosamund Pike) and her insanely handsome Warder Lan (played by professional model Daniel Henney) as they guide five young people on an epic journey of danger and doom. And these five youngsters – the Emonds Field Five – are all canonically attractive people who get drawn into passionate romances, flirtations, and even polyamorous relationships.
In fact, the reason why I think The wheel of time has the potential to intersect with a larger audience because much of it is focused on a tight-knit group of friends as they tackle life’s challenges. This is the Lord of the Rings meets a teen soap (and yet is not “YA”). The series imagines how a real teenager would react upon learning that he held extraordinary power and responsibility. (Probably not well!) Or how a bossy older sister would handle the news that the children she grew up leading have a new Aes Sedai controlling them. (Not good either!) There are crushes and kisses, brawls and epic acts of loyalty. It’s as much a show about three handsome bonehead boys and two arrogant, brave, beautiful girls having an affair like Netflix has hit. External banks is! Except that instead of looking for a treasure, the children of The wheel of time try to escape monsters and demonic beings while learning to wield magic.
And did I mention that everyone is hot? Well, they are. And they aren’t loaded with dwarf beards or elf ears, either. The wheel of time let hot people be hot.
Everyone who works there is delighted. Like, for Real.
I think the thing that got me most excited about Amazon The wheel of time This is how passionate everyone involved is about the story that they jump into storytelling. Showrunner Rafe Judkins spoke at length about his relationship with his mother while reading the books together when he was growing up. Judkins is a real fan and he shared some promising information about all of the cast and crew during production. And they, in turn, have shown a real understanding of what fans are looking for in the series.
Now you might be thinking, that’s a lot of tweets about a show that hasn’t come out yet. Well here’s the thing, I love all of these tweets because they show how excited the team behind the show is about the show. Plus, because they share that enthusiasm with one of the finest fan bases I’ve encountered in my many years as an online nerd …
Fandom is cool and fun.
Well I mean… I think they are!
Look, the internet is a cesspool of cruelty, so when you first start reading a fantasy series and only find encouragement from die-hard fans? It’s a big deal. Since I started reading the first one Wheel of time delivered, Eye of the world, in May, people following the #TwitterofTime hashtag cheered me on as I became one of the legions of people who fell into these books. (And I’ve heard that I’m going to need their support in a few books to get over the dreaded “slog.”)
But the fact that everyone is so passionate, kind, silly, and self-aware, makes me happy for this show. Because if this kind of attitude spills over into the Wheel of time the geeks who make the show, it’s gonna be super fun and awesome.
