Chelsea face transfer decision on loaned Swansea City as Southampton circle with Wales and Liverpool starlet also targeted
Swansea City lender Marc Guehi has reportedly caught the attention of Premier League side Southampton.
According to Athletic, the Saints have identified the center-back as a potential replacement for Jannik Vestergaard, who is attracting interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
However, there has yet to be contact with the 20-year-old’s parent club, Chelsea, who now have a decision to make on what will happen next.
Guehi, who has made 50 appearances in all competitions for the Swans, won a fair amount of applause after a series of sparkling projections, and there are growing suggestions that the player himself is keen to playing somewhere that can afford him regular Premier League football.
If the Swans failed in their bid for promotion this season, it would surely end any hope of keeping the South Wales center-back beyond his current loan spell.
Guehi currently has one year of contact at Stamford Bridge, although the Blues have the option of a 12-month extension.
It looks like a decision on the player’s future has yet to be made, with the England Under-21 international currently focusing on Swans rebounding from a three-game losing streak, starting with Millwall this week-end.
“What happened on Monday has happened a few times now,” he told the club’s official website. “But we have to come together and hold our heads up – even though it’s tough right now – and get through this tough time. That’s what we’re going to try to do – keep believing and keep moving forward.
“At this point in the season, we’ve done well to be where we are. We have to go back to what we were doing before and realize that we got here because we are good and we have done good things.
“We have to take that in the next game and come together – the fans have to stay with us as well, which they have been all season.
“It’s a matter of time before we get our win, and hopefully we can get some good wins under our belt in our last few games.”
Meanwhile, the same report claims the Saints may also be looking to take on Liverpool youngster Neco Williams.
The young Welshman has become one of Liverpool’s brightest young stars and is already firmly in Ryan Giggs’ plans for this year’s European Championships after impressing Wales as well.
Southampton are reportedly considering a possible loan-to-buy deal similar to the one that brought Kyle Walker-Peters from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2020.
Whether Liverpool would be interested in making a deal remains to be seen.
